NOVEMBER 23, 2022:
….and the lights are on at the 2022 Christmas at the Capitol display in the South Dakota Capitol Rotunda in Pierre.
Governor Kristi Noem had Gavin Bennett from Presho as her special guest to turn on the display.
This year’s featured tree is a 38 foot Black Hills Spruce donated by Steve and Sue Ahlers and Donald and Kristin Berger from Pierre. After being trimmed, it stands at 29.5 feet tall and was decorated by the South Dakota Shriners.
The “Merry Prairie Christmas” themed Christmas at the Capitol display includes around 80 trees decorated by volunteers from communities, schools, churches, nonprofit organizations and state government offices. Viewing hours are 8am-10pm daily– including holidays and weekends– from today (Nov. 23, 2022) through Dec. 26.
Additionally, Santa set out his North Pole Mailbox on first floor of the Capitol (by the South Dakota First Ladies and First Gentlemen Exhibit). Children can write letters to Santa at home and bring them along to the Capitol and drop them into the mailbox.

The 2022 Grand Lighting Ceremony for Christmas at the South Dakota Capitol in Pierre is tonight (Nov. 22, 2022) at 7 pm CT. This year’s theme is “Merry Prairie Christmas.”
The featured tree this year was donated by Steve and Sue Ahlers and Donald and Kristin Berger from Pierre. The Black Hills Spruce was originally 38 feet tall and now stands at 29.5 feet after being trimmed to fit in the Capitol Rotunda.
The Capitol Christmas display includes around 82 trees decorated by volunteers from communities, schools, churches, nonprofit organizations and state government offices. The feature tree has been decorated by the South Dakota Shriners. At the ceremony, music will be provided by the El Riad Shrine Chanters from the Sioux Falls area.
Santa will also be at the Capitol to say hello to the kids and set out his North Pole Mailbox for the year. Children can write letters to Santa at home and drop them into the mailbox during display hours. Santa’s mailbox is located on the first floor by the South Dakota First Ladies and First Gentlemen Exhibit.
Hours for folks to come view the tree display are 8am-10pm CT daily, starting Nov. 23– including holidays and weekends. The last day to view the display is Dec. 26, 2022.
