In rural areas such as Hughes and Stanley Counties, first responders often arrive at the scene of an accident before an ambulance can get there. That’s the case for AMR Ambulance Service in Pierre when it comes to getting to the far corners of Hughes or Stanley Counties.
AMR Operations Supervisor Matt Hardwick says being sure those responders have the training and equipment they need is also critical. He says AMR has been working with the Four Corners Fire Department to provide both.
Hardwick explains the difference between first responders, EMTs and paramedics.
He says emergency responders all work together, regardless of where they’re from.
AMR has new, five-year contracts to continue serving Hughes and Stanley counties, Fort Pierre and Pierre. Earlier this year, they came to all four entities saying their cost to operate in the two counties has increased from $135-thousand this year (2022) to $415-thousand for next year. A primary reason for the increase is a lack of staff. AMR has been forced to hire traveling paramedics from as far away as California to cover gaps in staffing here– which means covering the cost of travel, lodging and meals in addition to the wages for traveling paramedics.
