DECEMBER 29, 2022, UPDATE:
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Roads have reopened in storm-besieged Buffalo as authorities continue searching for people who may have died or remain stranded after last week’s blizzard. Mayor Byron Brown announced that the driving ban in New York’s second-most-populous city was lifted just after midnight Thursday (Dec. 29, 2022). He says significant progress has been made on snow removal, but he’s still asking residents not to drive if they don’t have to. Suburban roads, major highways and Buffalo Niagara International Airport had already reopened. At least 40 deaths have been reported in western New York from the blizzard that raged Friday and Saturday.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The National Guard is going door to door in parts of Buffalo and its suburbs to check on people who lost power during western New York’s deadliest winter storm in decades. Authorities are facing the tragic possibility of finding more victims amid melting snow as a deep freeze eases into milder weather. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz says officials fear they may find people who died alone or are ailing. Officials say more than three dozen people so far are reported to have died because of the blizzard that raged Friday (Dec. 23, 2022) and Saturday. Temperatures rose above 40 degrees Wednesday and are expected to be in the low 50s by Friday.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Officials in New York say state and military police were sent to keep people from driving in snow-choked Buffalo. County Executive Mark Poloncarz said Tuesday (Dec. 27, 2022) that police are being positioned at entrances to Buffalo and at major intersections to enforce a ban on driving. Officials say more than 30 people died in the region in addition to about two dozen other deaths the huge storm caused around the country. And an emergency services commissioner in the Buffalo area says crews are keeping an eye on warmer weather forecast for later in the week that could bring a threat of flooding as the snow melts.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The death toll from a pre-Christmas blizzard that paralyzed the Buffalo area and much of the country has risen to 28 in western New York, authorities said Monday (Dec. 26, 2022) as the region dug out from one of the worst weather-related disasters in its history. The dead have been found in their cars, homes and in snowbanks. Some died while shoveling snow. The storm that walloped much of the country is now blamed for at least 49 deaths, with rescue and recovery efforts continuing Monday. The blizzard roared through the region Friday and Saturday, stranding motorists, knocking out power and preventing emergency crews from reaching residents in frigid homes and stuck cars.
