U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) is congratulating Congressional App Challenge winners, Katelyn and Casie Dale, from Spearfish, South Dakota. Katelyn and Casie designed an app called “Lighthouse.” The Dales won for the second year in a row.
“Mastering the use of technology is an invaluable skill in the Digital Age,” said Johnson. “The Congressional App Challenge increases interest and participation in computer science. As a parent, I recognize the importance of ensuring that the media we surround ourselves with has a positive and healthy impact on how we live our lives, which is why I was especially impressed by Katelyn and Casie’s submission.”
Casie and Katelyn created “Lighthouse” a program to help kids and adults find literary material that is appropriate. According to Katelyn and Casie, “While our brains are so amazing, they need to be protected. We are surrounded by all different kinds of media that, if we’re not careful, can poorly program our brains especially those of young people and children in ways that we don’t even notice or understand…that is why we created Lighthouse.”
Katelyn and Casie were selected as the winner by a panel of Computer Science teachers in South Dakota.
Johnson announced the Congressional App Challenge in July. For further information about the Congressional App Challenge, please visit www.
