The Walworth County Commission’s first meeting of the new year was held Thursday, January 5th.
Commissioner Jim Houck was elected Commission Chairman, and Scott Schilling was elected Vice Chairman. Oaths of Office were given as Commissioners, Register of Deeds Brenda DeToy, Treasurer Cindy Geier, and Sheriff Josh Boll.
A motion was passed to set the Board of Finance per diem rates with personnel policy hours to match.
The commission approved the publication of a complete list of county employees and salaries.
Official county newspapers are the Mobridge Tribune and the Selby Record, and the official county depository is Bank West.
Commissioner Kevin Holgard made a motion and Commissioner Schilling seconded, to set the commissioners’ salary at $10, 743.46.
Also approved by the commission: election officials’ salaries, publication of the 2023 landfill rates, fees allowed by the funeral director, and salaries of elected officials with an amendment to correct the salary of the senior transport officer in the Sheriff’s Department.
A resolution to establish the number of employees and compensation in the Sheriff’s Department had to be amended to correct the numbers of employees, which are one full-time senior transport officer and four full-time transport officers. Sheriff Josh Boll also corrected the term “unlimited hours” for the six part-time transport officers to what works out to hourly wages on average of $8,733.22 per employee, which means his office will try not to exceed a total of $52,399.29 in pay this year for part-time transport officers.
For the Highway Department the 2023 equipment rates were approved as recommended by Highway Superintendent Gary Byre.
The commission approved the snow event declaration resolution as read by Emergency Manager Jeff Jensen.
The county will be contacting SDSU Extension to assist in a search for a new 4-H Youth Advisor, as the current one has taken a position as Second Administrative Assistant in the States Attorney’s office.
The commissioners approved giving a letter of support for the Lake Hiddenwood project, which will be included in a bill to be presented by Senator Bryan Breitling in the upcoming legislative session. County Auditor Deb Kahl will draft the letter.
The commissioners also passed a motion to advertise statewide for the auditor position.
