This morning’s (Jan. 11, 2023) flight from Pierre to Denver was not affected by a massive computer outage at the Federal Aviation Administration today that had delayed or canceled nearly 6000 flights as of mid-morning.
The FAA is working to restore the Notice to Air Missions System. Before commencing a flight, pilots are required to consult Notices to Air Missions, which lists potential adverse impacts on flights.
The computer outage led to a grounding order for all departing aircraft by the FAA, but a spokesperson for the Pierre Regional Airport says the ground hold was lifted by the time Denver Air Connection’s 8:20am flight left for Denver International Airport. Pierre has another flight scheduled to leave at 4pm and has flights scheduled to arrive from Denver at 3:30pm and 8:05pm.
While the White House initially said that there is no evidence of a cyberattack, President Joe Biden said “we don’t know” and told reporters that he’s directed the US Department of Transportation to investigate the cause of the disruption.
