This Saturday, January 14, the South Dakota Discovery Center, 805 West Sioux Avenue, is unveiling its new portable planetarium system! During the monthly Starry Saturday event, 11:00am-1:00pm, visitors can be the first to explore the vastness of space with a 3D, immersive experience unlike any other. The day starts with a naming ceremony and celebration of all those who made the Star-Struck Campaign a success, which led to the purchase of the new dome and computer. Treats and beverages will be provided, be sure to stop in while supplies last.
The SDDC kicked off its #StarStruckSD campaign in mid-July with the goal of raising $30,000 by Oct. 15. The money enabled the Center to purchase the new portable planetarium and dome system that can be used to explore deep space, as well as our own planet and solar system, through immersive 3D shows.
“The success of our Star-Struck campaign came down to our donors and a big gift from Jan Martin,” says Dr. Rhea Waldman, SDDC Executive Director. “A passionate science educator, she saw the generosity of our initial givers, and decided to make a big bang, clearing the way for the campaign’s success. We are forever grateful to her and to everyone that supports our mission to bring STEM education to all ages.”
