BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota House of Representative have approved legislation to legalize sports betting in the state. The measure passed Thursday (Jan. 12, 2023) will go to the state Senate. If senators approve it, North Dakota residents will vote on the issue in the November 2024 election. A change to the state constitution is required to legalize sports betting. Currently, sports betting is legal in North Dakota only at tribal casinos. The bill’s sponsor, Republican Rep. Greg Stemen, of Fargo, argued the measure would bring millions of dollars in revenue to the state and provide consumer protection for sports betting. Opponents contend expanded gambling would increase gambling addictions and ruin lives.

UNDATED (AP)- A North Dakota House panel has heard arguments on a measure to allow voters to decide if sports betting should be legalized outside tribal casinos across the state. The committee recommended against passage Monday (Jan. 10, 2023), but the resolution will get a floor vote later. Supporters say the state could generate millions of dollars in taxes if it legalizes the industry. Opponents say it would worsen gambling problems for a relatively small increase in revenue. A U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 2018 cleared the way for all 50 states to offer sports betting. More than 30 states have legalized it so far.
