JANUARY 18, 2023, UPDATE:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — An attorney for Derek Chauvin has asked an appeals court to throw out the former Minneapolis police officer’s convictions in the murder of George Floyd. William Mohrman told the Minnesota Court of Appeals on Wednesday (Jan. 18, 2023) that the trial judge should have moved the case out of Minneapolis because of the extensive pretrial publicity, and fears of violent protests that led to unprecedented security precautions. Floyd died in 2020 after Chauvin, who is white, pinned the Black man to the ground with his knee on his neck for 9 1/2 minutes. Prosecutors argued that Chauvin got a fair trial and just sentence.
JANUARY 18, 2023:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — An attorney for Derek Chauvin is expected to ask an appeals court to throw out the former Minneapolis police officer’s convictions in the murder of George Floyd. He plans to argue before the Minnesota Court of Appeals Wednesday that legal and procedural errors deprived Chauvin of a fair trial. Floyd died in 2020 after Chauvin, who is white, pinned the Black man to the ground with his knee on his neck for 9 1/2 minutes. Floyd’s death touched off a firestorm of protests and a painful national reckoning with racism. Prosecutors argue that Chauvin had a fair trial and a just sentence.
OCTOBER 2021:
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Derek Chauvin has hired an attorney to represent him as he appeals his murder conviction in the death of George Floyd. Attorney William Mohrman filed a document with the court on Friday (Oct. 15, 2021) saying he would represent Chauvin on his appeal. This comes after the Minnesota Supreme Court denied Chauvin’s request to use a public defender in the appeal process, saying a review of his debts and assets shows he’s ineligible. Morhman is a partner with Mohrman, Kaardal & Erickson, a law firm that has been involved in cases challenging the 2020 presidential election results and COVID-19 vaccine mandates for health care workers.
