Today (Jan. 31, 2023) and all the rest of this week will likely be dominated by hearings on the possible discipline and expulsion of Republican Sen. Julie Frye-Mueller of Rapid City.
At 5 p.m. (CT), the Senate Select Committee on Discipline and Expulsion, holds its first hearing. It is scheduled to hear from the female Legislative Research Council staffer who filed a complaint against Frye-Mueller.
The hearing will not be open to the public, but the committee will later provide a redacted transcript.
In more “ordinary” legislative business:
At 7:45 a.m. (CT), the House Health and Services Committee is scheduled to consider a bill that would make it illegal for medical providers to change the gender of a minor for nonmedical reasons. (HB 1080)
Also, at 7:45 a.m. (CT), the House Taxation Committee will consider a bill that would reduce the sales and use tax on most items and services from four and a half percent to four percent. (HB 1137)
At 10 a.m. (CT), the Senate Commerce and Energy Committee is scheduled to consider a bill requiring South Dakota companies with 100 or more employees to list the salary range and benefits of job openings. (SB 109)
At 2 p.m. (CT), the Senate is scheduled to consider bills appropriating funds for new South Dakota National Guard facilities in Watertown and Sioux Falls. (SB 12 and 13)
Also, at 2 p.m. (CT), the House is scheduled to consider a resolution that put a constitutional amendment on the 2024 ballot to allow the state to have a work requirement for able-bodied Medicaid recipients. (HJR 5004).
Tuesday is the 14th day of the 38-day session.
