PIERRE – Three more former Pierre Governor football stars are headed to the next level.
Wide receiver Jack Merkwan, defensive back/kick returner Jayden Wiebe and lineman Christian Busch all signed letters of intent Wednesday to play for the University of Sioux Falls.
Merkwan is the Governors’ all-time leading receiver with 123 receptions, 2,706 yards (also the most ever in 11AA) and 28 touchdowns. In his senior season, Merkwan had 48 catches for 1,058 yards and 11 touchdowns. Also, Merkwan set an 11AA state championship game record with a 92-yard touchdown reception from Lincoln Kienholz in Pierre’s 35-20 11AA title game win over Tea Area in Vermillion on November 12. Merkwan also established a championship game record for any classification with 234 yards receiving.
Wiebe played in the Governors’ secondary, with 18 tackles and four interceptions in his senior year. He also was a return specialist, with two kickoff return touchdowns in 2022, including a 98-yard return against Aberdeen Central.
Busch was the center on an offensive line that averaged just over 468 yards a game.
They will play for Jim Glogowski, who became USF’s head coach in December after spending seven seasons as associate head coach at Minnesota State.
