Today (Feb. 6, 2023) is Day 18 of the 38-day South Dakota Legislative session. The big issue is whether carbon dioxide pipelines should receive the right of eminent domain for right of ways.
At 7:45 a.m. (CT), the House State Affairs Committee will consider seven bills on the matter. It is an intrasquad agricultural fight between economic titans, pitting the ethanol plants who want to decrease their carbon footprint against farmers and ranchers who don’t want the pipelines going across their property.
In other likely legislative action scheduled for today:
- At 7:45 a.m., the Senate Health and Human Services Committee will consider a bill that would provide for philosophical exceptions to required vaccinations. (SB 130)
- At 10 a.m., the House Commerce and Energy Committee will consider a bill that would allow a child under 14 to work until 9 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. (HB 1180)
- At 2 p.m., the Senate is supposed to consider a bill that would provide for the establishment of regional jail authorities. (SB 74)
- Also, at 2 p.m., the House of Representatives is set to debate a bill increasing how much jurors are paid. (HB 1098). In addition, the bills authorizing funds for new South Dakota National Guard facilities in Watertown and Sioux Falls are still pending.
