HIGHLIGHTS: A list of the greatest plays in Super Bowl history includes the David Tyree helmet catch, the Philly Special, and the Patriots intercepting the Seahawks at their own goal line.
FULL STORY: The website StudyFinds.org put together a list of the Five Best Super Bowl Plays of All Time. They’re all pretty recent, but they’re also all pretty legit. Here they are:
1. The David Tyree helmet catch, Super Bowl 42.
Tom Brady and the Patriots were a little over a minute way from victory. The Giants had the ball on third down with five yards to go. Eli Manning had to pull some serious Houdini moves to avoid being sacked . . .
Once he escaped the pressure, he launched a 32-yarder to Tyree . . . who controlled it all the way to the ground by holding it against his helmet with one hand.
The Giants went on to win the game, and spoil what would have been a 19 – 0 season for the Pats.
2. Santonio Holmes’ touchdown catch, Super Bowl 43.
The Steelers were trailing the Cardinals 23 to 20 with 43 seconds left in the game. Ben Roethlisberger floated one to the back corner of the end zone.
Holmes was able to bring it in with both feet just barely in, before falling out of bounds.
3. Malcolm Butler’s goal line interception, Super Bowl 49.
With 43 seconds left, the Seahawks were trailing the Patriots 28 to 24. But they had the ball on the Pats’ 1-yard line, and it was only second and goal.
Everyone EXPECTED them to give the ball to Marshawn Lynch so he could muscle it in there. But instead, Russell Wilson tried to PASS to Ricardo Lockette . . . and was intercepted by Butler, clinching the win for New England.
4. Kevin Dyson Gets Stopped at the 1-yard line, Super Bowl 34.
With six seconds on the clock, the Rams were leading the Titans 23 to 16. But Tennessee had a 1st and 10 at the Rams’ 10-yard line. QB Steve McNair hit receiver Dyson at the 5-yard line. But he was hit at the 3 by Rams linebacker Mike Jones, and he hit the ground with the ball just ONE YARD SHORT as time ran out.
5. The Philly Special, Super Bowl 52.
The second play on this list that gives Patriots fans nightmares. While Eagles QB Nick Foles pretended to adjust the offensive line, rookie running back Corey Clement took a direct snap, then handed off to third-string tight end Trey Burton.
Burton then threw to a wide open . . . Nick Foles in the end zone. The Eagles ended up winning 41 to 33.
