The cost of a dozen eggs has surpassed that of a pound of beef for the first time since the Bureau of Labor began tracking prices in 1980.
According to The Daily Mail, in January 2023, the average cost of a dozen large grade A eggs was $4.82, while a pound of ground beef was $4.64. A year prior, in January 2022, eggs cost $1.93 while beef was $4.77. In the last 12 months alone, egg prices have surged by a staggering 70%.
This historic increase in the price of eggs is a result of a global bird flu that wiped out nearly 100 million poultry. Several US states, including Iowa, Ohio, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Colorado, suffered severe outbreaks, according to the CDC.
