FEBRUARY 24, 2023:
All sections of Interstate 90 and Interstate 29 are reopened to traffic throughout the state of South Dakota. Interstate 90, between Mitchell and Sioux Falls, had significant blowing and drifting through the area, and motorists are advised to be aware of continued drifting in the eastbound lanes especially near bridge ends.
Travel Conditions:
Due to the extremely cold temperatures and windy conditions, applying chemical and salt are not effective treatment options.
- Travelers should expect to encounter ice-covered roads and snow covered shoulders.
- Snow removal equipment will be working to remove ice in the driving lanes and snow remaining on shoulders.
- Please use extra caution and reduce travel speed.
No Travel Advisories continue to be in place on some state highways.

FEBRUARY 23, 2023, UPDATE:
The South Dakota Department of Transportation has the following plan for Thursday, Feb. 23, 2023, as conditions improve.
- Motorists should NOT use secondary highways to avoid Interstate closures.
No Travel Advisories continue to impact state highways across the eastern half of the state of South Dakota, with many highways physically impassable from blockages of large snow drifts, stranded vehicles and completely plugged bridges.
I-90 Updates:
- I-90 (westbound and eastbound) from Mitchell to Vivian is back open.
- The remaining section of I-90 closed between Mitchell and Sioux Falls had significant drifting and cleanup is still being done. Progress will be monitored. This section will be reopened as soon as conditions safely allow. SDDOT anticipates the remaining section of I-90 to reopen mid to late afternoon, as drifting is cleared from the lanes of travel.
I-29 Updates:
- I-29 (northbound and southbound) from Sioux Falls to Brookings is open.
- The remaining sections of I-29 closed between Brookings and the North Dakota state line had significant drifting and cleanup is still being done. Progress will be monitored. This section will be reopened as soon as conditions safely allow. SDDOT anticipates the remaining sections of I-29 to reopen mid to late afternoon, as drifting is cleared from the lanes of travel.

FEBRUARY 23, 2023:
Because of accumulating snow totals and sustained high winds causing blizzard conditions and extensive drifting, the South Dakota Department of Transportation has closed Interstate 90– eastbound and westbound– from the Minnesota state line to Vivian. Interstate 29– northbound and southbound– remains closed from the North Dakota state line to Sioux Falls.
No Travel Advisories are in place on multiple secondary highways throughout South Dakota due to high winds, blowing snow and low visibility. Motorists should not use secondary highways to avoid Interstate closures. Sub-zero wind chills pose a danger for anyone who may become stranded outdoors.

FEBRUARY 22, 2023:
The South Dakota Department of Transportation is closing segments of Interstate 29 and Interstate 90 because a combination of accumulating snow and strong winds are causing snow and ice covered roads along with blizzard-like conditions. Motorists should NOT use secondary highways to avoid Interstate closures. Conditions are forecasted to continue to deteriorate during the overnight hours and throughout the morning hours on Wednesday.
The following Interstate closures are planned for Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023:
- Interstate 29 (northbound and southbound) will be closed from the North Dakota state line to Brookings at 8 p.m.
- Interstate 29 (northbound and southbound) will be closed from Brookings (exit 132) to Sioux Falls (exit 84) at 10 p.m.
- Interstate 90 (eastbound and westbound) will be closed from Sioux Falls (exit 395) to Mitchell (exit 332) at 10 p.m.
- Motorists should NOT use secondary highways to avoid Interstate closures.
A blizzard warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for much of the state on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023, with heavy accumulating snow totals and sustained high winds expected to cause blizzard-like conditions and extensive drifting. With conditions approaching near zero visibility and significant drifting of snow, SDDOT anticipates additional sections of Interstate 90 and Interstate 29 will be closed on Wednesday morning as the system moves across the state.
Motorists should NOT use secondary highways to avoid Interstate closures.
Secondary Highways:
No Travel Advisories are also expected to be placed on secondary highways throughout South Dakota due to high winds, blowing snow, and low visibilities associated with this winter storm system. Motorists should NOT use secondary highways to avoid Interstate closures. Significantly reduced visibilities and blizzard-like conditions, along with extreme wind chills, will make travel very dangerous over the next few days.
Motorists should NOT use secondary highways to avoid Interstate closures.
