RAPID CITY – Just like 2021, it was a thriller and a dual championship for the Pierre Governors.
Pierre edged Brandon Valley 34-33 Saturday to win the SDHSAA State Wrestling Class A Dual Championship at the Summit Arena at The Monument. The edge was the tie-breaker, which went to Pierre because of four maximum-points wins to the Lynx’ three. Each team had three pins in the title match, but a forfeit win gave Pierre the full six points at 170 pounds.
Pierre trailed 13-0 before Lucas Chamberlain and Deegan Houska won by decision. After the forfeit win by Trey Lewis, Chance Carda, Gavin Stotts and EJ Boutchee all won with pins and the Governors led 30-13. Two pins and a technical fall brought Brandon Valley back to a 30-30 tie. Alex Oedekoven then won a 120-pound decision to put Pierre back in the lead at 33-30. At 126, Aaron Tucker of Brandon Valley then needed to win with at least one bonus point to give the Lynx the title, but won only by decision over Lincoln Schoenhard, wrapping up Pierre’s second dual championship in three years
The Governors won over Rapid City Stevens 46-20 in the 1st round and over Sturgis 54-18 in the semifinal.
A welcome home celebration for the Governor wrestling team will be held on Tuesday at 6:00 PM at the Riggs High Gym.
Class B
Canton won its third dual title in four years with a 46-18 victory over Bon Homme/Avon in the championship match. Kimball-White Lake/Platte-Geddes finished sixth.
