Let’s enjoy some positive stories from this week on this Feel Good Friday…
1. A 9/11 first responder named Rob Weisberg is about to start a very long walk this weekend. He’s hiking the Appalachian Trail . . . all 2,200 miles of it . . . and trying to raise $100,000 for the charity Paws of War. They’re the ones who help bring animals back from overseas. His plan is to start in Georgia tomorrow, and finish in Maine on September 11th. So, six months total. If you want to support him, you can donate through PawsOfWar.org.
2. A 79-year-old teacher in Oklahoma has been running a 5K every day since the pandemic started . . . now more than 1,000 days in a row. She says she tried it for a week, and it just became a habit eventually.
3. How great is this idea? A nonprofit called Loose Ends launched last September. If someone passes away . . . like a grandparent . . . they’ll take their unfinished knitting project, and finish it for you. It’s free. You just pay shipping. They’ve only been around six months and already have about 1,000 volunteers.
4. A cop in Florida named Marshall Smith received a commendation for saving a kitten that got stuck in the wheel well of a car. It’s since been adopted, and the owners decided to name it Marshall, in his honor.
5. A landlord in Upstate New York recently sold an apartment building, and got $50,000 less than he could have . . . because he insisted the next owner take care of a 93-year-old resident who was a Holocaust survivor. Her name is Alice Schuman. She’d lived there for 60 years, and was only paying $200 a month when everyone else paid $2,000. The guy who bought the place agreed to keep her rent the same. And the old landlord had been taking her to the store and bank once a month, plus doctor appointments. So the new landlord took that over too. A few months later, she had a medical issue. He had to kick down her door to get her to a hospital. At that point, doctors said she couldn’t be on her own anymore. But instead of leaving things up to the state, he got a lawyer . . . became her legal guardian . . . and got her into a nice nursing home. Then he visited her almost every day for the rest of her life. Sadly, she passed away back in January. But he was right there with her, holding her hand.
6. A guy in Florida just broke a world record by doing 3,264 push-ups in an hour. Pretty impressive, especially at SIXTY YEARS OLD. Over the past year, he did 160,000 push-ups to train for it. (There are 3,600 seconds in an hour, so it’s basically a push-up every SECOND.)
7. A guy in South Dakota posted a photo on Reddit after his six-year-old foster daughter wrote him a note that said, “Please love me.” He wrote her one back that said, “We will ALWAYS love you” and put it on her nightstand. He and his wife are planning to adopt her AND her little brother soon. They just have to wait a few months to make it official. (Here’s her note, and his note.)
8. A town in Massachusetts threw a surprise birthday for their oldest resident last week. Her name is Herlda Senhouse, and she turned 112 last Tuesday.
9. A guy in Oregon got snowed in on a remote road and didn’t have cell service. But he had a DRONE, and how clever is this? He attached his phone to it . . . typed out a text to his friend . . . and flew it high enough until it got service. So then the text went through, and he got rescued.
10. A cemetery in Iowa used to have two geese named Bud and Blossom, a male and female that were mates. Sadly, Bud passed away last year, and Blossom hadn’t been the same since. The good news is the story has a happy ending. The cemetery recently posted a personal ad looking for a male goose to keep her company. It said, “Lonely, widowed domestic goose seeks life partner for companionship and occasional shenanigans.” And someone with a goose named Frankie came forward. He’d also lost his mate. So they brought him to the cemetery on Valentine’s Day last month. Now Blossom and Frankie are inseparable. (Here’s a photo.)
