PIERRE – The SDHSAA has acknowledged and apologized for a scoring error in last Saturday’s third-place game of the Class B boys state tournament, which was won by Aberdeen Christian in overtime over White River 70-65.
Aberdeen Christian was, inadvertently, given a point for a third-quarter free throw that was actually missed. By rule, the scoring error should have been addressed at the next dead ball after the incident, but it was not discussed until later in the game, when the White River scorekeeper recognized the mistake.
SDHSAA Executive Director Dan Swartos extended an apology to White River, who he acknowledged is “understandably frustrated.” He also said that there will be additional training for scorer’s table workers and officials and that there is the possibility that the official scorer and team scorekeepers are situated closer together at future state tournaments.
