PIERRE – On an historic day, a great start eventually turned into a difficult finish for Pierre Governor Softball.
In the first SDHSAA-sanctioned softball game for the Governors, they had an early 3-0 lead before Rapid City Central rallied for three runs in the fifth inning and five more in the sixth Tuesday for a 9-4 victory over Pierre at T.F. Riggs High School.
Hannah Lemieux’s double in the bottom of the first drove in Kara Weiss with the first run in Governor softball history. The lead became 3-0 after second inning RBI doubles by Weiss and Noel Kist.
Central (1-0) scored a third-inning run, then took a 4-3 lead with three fifth inning runs, the last two of which came on steals of home by Holly Jacobs and Keera Taylor.
Pierre (0-1) evened the game at 4-4 in the home fifth on an RBI single by Khalan Smart.
The Cobblers then decided the game with their big sixth inning, aided by two of Pierre’s five errors.
Erin Leiferman pitched a complete game for the Governors, allowing nine runs and nine hits while striking out 13.
Pierre will play Aberdeen Central and Watertown Saturday at the Winter Dome at Presentation College in Aberdeen.
