The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) says weather dependent, a reconstruction project on Benson Road and the Interstate 229 interchange is scheduled to begin today (April 3, 2023). The project includes widening Benson Road, construction of a diverging diamond interchange, structure development work, grading, concrete surfacing, curb and gutter, storm sewer, lighting, signals, permanent signing, and pavement marking.
Traffic Impacts:
Benson Road will remain open to traffic as the contractor works on the north driving lanes of Benson Road from Casco Avenue to Hall Avenue, east of Interstate 229. Motorists are advised that Benson Road will be reduced to two lanes and two-way traffic will be in place from Casco Avenue to Interstate 229. It will take the entire 2023 construction season to complete reconstruction of the new Benson Road westbound lanes. At the end of this construction season, SDDOT will place two-way traffic onto the new lanes.
Project Detour Route:
The following traffic detour will be installed around the project for motorists to avoid the construction project:
{Sycamore Avenue north to 60th Street, east to Veterans Parkway, north to Interstate 90, west to Cliff Avenue, south to Rice Street, east to Bahnson Avenue, north to Hall Avenue}
The detour will remain in place through November.
Business Access:
Access will be maintained to businesses throughout the project.
Project Timelines:
The $34.3 million project will reconstruct one and one-half mile of Benson Road and approximately one mile of Interstate 229 ramps. The reconstruction project on Benson Road is anticipated to be completed by Nov. 17, 2023. The overall completion date for this reconstruction project is June 27, 2025. The prime contractor for this project is T&R Contracting of Sioux Falls, SD.
