Can’t find a waiter for a cup of coffee? It may be because of how you’re dressed! A University of Missouri study found that waiters often think that dapper diners will leave better tips…and may pay extra attention to them.
222 participants who had experience working as servers in restaurants were shown images of diners and asked to identify who would leave a good tip. They tended to show a positive reaction to those who were dressed nicely, and thought well-dressed men tipped better than well-dressed women.
However, casually-dressed men were viewed as bad tippers.
“While the tipping culture can motivate servers to provide quality service to some customers, it may result in unequal service for others,” study co-author Kathleen Kim said. (
