The South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office, in conjunction with the US Army Corps of Engineers, will be hosting an Archaeology Camp in Pierre in June (June 6-8, 2023). The camp is for students entering grades 4-6 this fall (2023-24 school year). Campers commit to attending all three days.
Registration will be done online and begins Monday (May 1) at 8am CT. The registration fee is $30 per camper. Registration will close when the camp is full or on May 3, whichever comes first.
At Archaeology Camp, campers will get an introduction to the field of archaeology. They will learn why archaeological digs are conducted, what stories artifacts can tell us about the past and more. In addition to excavation at the site, campers will enjoy activities such as processing artifacts and visiting historic sites, including the Oahe Chapel and the Turtle Effigy.
This camp is an active, outdoor experience on a real archaeological site. Campers should be prepared to hike and work in the dirt, while having a fun and meaningful learning experience.
