MAY 18, 2023:
City leaders from Bowdle and Groton have been chosen (May 16, 2023) by colleagues to serve as district officers for the South Dakota Municipal League.
Bowdle Mayor Rick Boschee was re-elected as District 6 Chair and Brian Bahr, Council member from Groton, was elected as Vice Chair. As the district chair, Boschee will act as a contact for and represent their district as a member of the SDML Board of Directors.
During that same meeting, South Dakota Municipal League Executive Director David Reiss spoke about the outcome of the 2023 Legislative Session and the impact new laws will have on municipalities in the state. He also discussed the direction and future of the Municipal League and services offered to the municipalities.
Reiss says municipal governments provide a vast array of services and they see a need to get more information out to citizens and legislators. He thinks taxpayers would be proud of their local government entities if they were fully aware of how much service a municipality provides, at a relatively low cost.
In other business, those attending voted to hold the 2024 District 6 Meeting in Groton.
MARCH 31, 2023:
More than 55 municipal officials representing 6 cities gathered at the South Dakota Municipal League’s annual District 8 Meeting, held Thursday (March 30, 2023) in Murdo.
Brittany Smith, Philip City Administrator, was elected District 8 Chair and Krysti Barnes, Murdo Finance Officer, was elected Vice Chair. As the district chair, Smith will act as a contact for and represent their district as a member of the SDML Board of Directors.
David Reiss, South Dakota Municipal League Executive Director, spoke about the outcome of the 2023 Legislative Session and the effect new laws will have on South Dakota municipalities. Reiss also discussed the direction and future of the Municipal League and services offered to the municipalities.
“More and more we are seeing the need to get better information out to the citizens and legislators. Municipal government provides a vast array of services, and people need to be informed of where their tax dollars are going,” Reiss said. “This type of education can only benefit municipal government. The taxpayers would be very proud of their local government if they were fully aware of how much service a municipality provides at a relatively low cost.”
MARCH 28, 2023:
City leaders from Winner and Platte have been chosen (March 23, 2023) by colleagues to serve as district officers for the South Dakota Municipal League.
Chandra Phillips, Winner Finance Officer, was elected as District 4 Chair and Shauna Meyerink, Platte Finance Officer, was elected as Vice Chair. As the district chair, Phillips will act as a contact for and represent their district as a member of the SDML Board of Directors.

Amy Leon, SDML President for 2023 and City Administrator of Yankton, was also in attendance to discuss the League’s priorities and to conduct the election of District 4 officers for the upcoming year.

City leaders from Herried and Mobridge have been chosen by colleagues to serve as district officers for the South Dakota Municipal League.
Gary Weismantel, Herreid Mayor, was elected as District 7 Chair and Gene Cox, Mobridge Mayor, was elected as Vice Chair. Weismantel will represent District 7 as a member of the SDML Board of Directors. They were elected at a meeting earlier this week (March 22, 2023) in Akaska.

City leaders from Ree Heights and Pierre have been chosen (March 20, 2023) by colleagues to serve as district officers for the South Dakota Municipal League.
Ree Heights Board President Renae Phinney was elected District 5 Chair and Pierre City Administrator Kristi Honeywell was elected as Vice Chair. Phinney will act as a contact for and represent District 5 as a member of the SDML Board of Directors. They were elected at a meeting earlier this week (March 20, 2023) at a meeting in Onida.
