If you love uplifting and positive stories well here you go, some Feel Good Friday stories!
1. A Sherpa who guides people up Mount Everest recently saved a climber’s life after finding him stuck in a section near the summit called the “death zone.” The guy was clinging to a rope and shivering from the cold. It took six hours to get him down to a spot where he could be airlifted out. And he couldn’t walk, so the Sherpa CARRIED him for a lot of it. Experts say rescuing someone up that high is very rare, and “almost impossible.” But the guy survived.
2. This kid’s going places: A 14-year-old in St. Louis named Xavier Jones walked six miles to get to his middle-school graduation last week. And when someone at the graduation mentioned it, he got a standing ovation. One of those people was Dr. Latonia Collins Smith, who’s the president of Harris-Stowe State University. She was so impressed, she’s giving Xavier a FULL SCHOLARSHIP when he’s ready for college. When they told him he was getting a “full ride,” he thought they just meant a ride to school. They had to tell him it was much better than that.
3. 16-year-old Ryheem Lumpkins works as a cashier at a pizza place in Missouri, and doesn’t let his physical limitations keep him down. He was born with a birth defect where both arms never fully formed. But he has a great attitude and says he’s proud of who he is. Back in April, a random customer named Robert Samay tipped him five bucks. And cashiers don’t usually get tips, so he was really grateful for it. And his great attitude obviously made an impression, because Robert decided to stop back in this week . . . to tip him an additional $2,500. Ryheem says he’s been saving up for his first car. Now he can get it a lot sooner than he planned.
4 . Transit employees in San Francisco saved a turtle that wandered onto some train tracks in San Francisco the other day. An eagle-eyed train BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) operator spotted it and called it in. The turtle was relocated to a safer location.
5. A nurse named Emily Raines was flying home to Baltimore after a vacation in the Bahamas with her boyfriend, who also used to be a nurse. And they ended up saving another passenger’s life. The guy collapsed and turned purple. But they kept doing CPR until he finally came back seven minutes before their flight landed. They say they got a lot of high fives from other people on board.
6. A 23-year-old woman in Arizona posted an emotional video last month, after her mom accidentally donated her $3,700 Canon camera to Goodwill. And before she could get it back, someone bought it for 70 bucks. But after the video went viral, her local news did a story. And the couple who bought it came forward. She offered a $500 reward, but they didn’t want it even though they’ve been having money issues. So she reached out to Canon, and the company stepped up. They gave the couple another camera to replace the one they returned.
7. A guy from Maryland who used to be a garbageman just graduated from Harvard Law School. He was in the news back in 2020 after a video of him reacting to his acceptance letter went viral.
8. How many lives do you think this used up? An 18-pound cat in Thailand fell off a sixth-floor balcony . . . smashed through the back windshield of a car . . . and he’s totally fine. He didn’t even break any bones.
9. A 96-year-old woman in Canada named Rejeanne Fairhead broke a world record over the weekend. She ran a 5K in just over 51 minutes. It’s the fastest time ever recorded by a woman over the age of 95.
10. A 43-year-old guy in California tried to rob a bank last week. But another customer ended it with a hug. 69-year-old Michael Armus Sr. recognized the guy as a former neighbor who was friends with his daughter. He walked up and got him to go outside. Then they hugged and waited for the cops to show up.
11. A billionaire named Robert Hale Jr. spoke at UMass Boston’s graduation last Thursday . . . and surprised 2,500 students by giving them $1,000 each. So, a total of $2.5 MILLION. He had one condition though. He asked them to give half to a family member, or someone who’s helped them get where they are today.
12. 26 high-schoolers in Michigan spent their school year building someone a new home. The school does it every year to give real-world experience to kids who want to learn a trade. It also ends up providing a family with affordable housing. It’s around 1,400 square feet, and they built the whole thing at their campus. A flatbed truck just moved it to a lot a half-mile away. It cost $100,000 to build, and it’ll be priced around $170,000. (Here’s a photo.)
