He didn’t try going under the infamous low-clearance train bridge, but a semi driver did get a ticket for a Truck Route violation after getting hung up while crossing a set of railroad tracks in Pierre yesterday evening (7:23pm, July 26, 2023).
Information from the Pierre Police Department says officers responded to the area near the intersection of Highland Avenue and Pleasant Drive (just south of Georgia Morse Middle School and across from Oahe Federal Credit Union) after a southbound semi hauling a large steel beam, got high centered on the railroad tracks.
The Central South Dakota Communications dispatch center immediately called RCPE to notify them of the blocked railway, while Pierre City Street Department staff and patrol officers shut down traffic in the area. Local large equipment companies AGE Corporation, Morris Inc. and Black Hills Towing provided assistance. Traffic resumed to normal after approximately three hours.
52 year old Scott Burke of Des Moines, IA, was cited for truck route violation.
The beam being transported was for the new bridge being built over the Missouri River between Pierre and Fort Pierre.
No damage estimates are available at this time.
