Motorcycle enthusiasts and adventure seekers from across the nation gather for the 83rd annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. With a profound history and captivating landscape, the Sturgis Rally promises to be an unforgettable experience, welcoming an estimated 500,000 visitors every year.
The Rally continues to have a significant impact on the local economy. August marks the highest month for visitor spending, and last year, the Rally generated a staggering $45 million in state and local tax revenue, according to 2022 post-rally summit data provided by The City of Sturgis. Additionally, over $1 million was generated and donated to local charities, showcasing the event’s commitment to giving back to the community. Also derived from 2022 findings, the average rally-goer stays in the hills for about 6-8 days, allowing the economic benefits to extend far beyond the town of Sturgis.
“The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally provides a significant economic boost to the Black Hills & Badlands region and the entire state. The impact is vital across I-90 and along highways leading to the Black Hills,” said Michelle Thomson, President and CEO of the regional tourism marketing organization, Black Hills and Badlands Tourism Association (BH&B). “While the official start of the Rally is August 4, the week prior is abuzz with motorcyclists coming in early to enjoy the Black Hills. The excitement of the Rally attracts visitors, and our hospitality businesses are ready to provide Rally-goers with the experiences which bring them back year-after-year.”
Recognized as a national icon, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has earned accolades and coverage from esteemed publications like Forbes, which recently ran an article, “Doing 2023 Sturgis in Style- Where to Stay & Eat,” highlighting its significance as a premier event in the country.
The driving force behind the Sturgis Rally’s continued success lies in its locale. The Black Hills and Badlands region offers several scenic rides, all of which have established routes and maps which can be picked up at the Black Hills and Badlands visitor center at 1851 Discovery Circle, Rapid City, 57701, or downloaded at blackhillsbadlands.com.
Beyond the acclaimed motorcycle rides, the event organizers have put substantial efforts into making the Rally a multi-faceted festival; exciting entertainment and events await visitors, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Notably, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has not only become a haven for motorcyclists but also welcomes non-riders. Since 2018, the Rally has evolved into a diverse festival with events and activities, catering to all attendees’ interests. This inclusivity has contributed to the Rally’s popularity and enduring appeal.
“We want everyone to feel the spirit of the Rally, regardless of whether they have a bike or not. The collaborative marketing efforts we’ve made aim to recapture the unique, old-school spirit and the originality of this event,” added Thomson.
The 83rd Sturgis Rally boasts an exceptional lineup of entertainment, with headliners for rock concerts including REO, Styx, Def Leppard, and ZZ-Top. The action-packed week also features the thrilling Daredevil Wire act and a special Freedom Celebration/Military Appreciation night on Thursday.
As the Rally approaches, locals are urged to prepare for the influx of visitors and traffic. Motorists are encouraged to exercise caution, watch the roads, drive defensively, and be mindful of increased traffic. By working together, the community can ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
