Randy Travis will be the subject of a multi-artist tribute concert in Huntsville, AL, in October. Presented by Outback Presents, “A Heroes & Friends Tribute to Randy Travis” will take place at VBC Propst Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 24.
Performers for the concert will be revealed later, but Mary Travis, the singer’s wife, said she expects the show to feature 18 to 20 special guests.
“There’s nothing more that Randy would want than to be up on that stage singing his own music,” she said during a virtual press conference on Wednesday. “Since we know that he can’t, to have these artists that give their time and give their affection and their heart into making his music means a lot to us.”
The material will focus on Travis’ 23 worldwide No. 1 singles, which include award winners “On the Other Hand” and “Forever and Ever, Amen.” “Our attempt will be to cover each one of those 23,” Mary said, “and if there’s room for more then we will cover some of the others.”
The Von Braun Center previously has hosted similar multi-artist tribute concerts honoring Lee Greenwood and the late George Jones. “The last two visits have been very successful, and not hear we’re doing a tribute with Randy Travis — he’s a hero; he’s an awesome guy,” said Von Braun Center Executive Director Steve Maples.
A portion of the concert’s proceeds will benefit the Randy Travis Foundation, which focuses on stroke and aphasia awareness and supporting music education in schools. Travis has experienced aphasia, which affects the ability to understand and express speech, since suffering a stroke in 2015.
