PIERRE – Pierre Governor cross-country began its practice Thursday, and there are high expectations for the Governor boys from within the team. Behind senior Jared Lutmer, who boys Head Coach Jim Keyes calls the best runner in the state, and sophomore Caleb Morris, Pierre realistically expects to have a good chance to win a boys team cross-country state championship for the first time.
Keyes further described his hopes for this season.
Keyes said that a good track season for Lutmer should help him for cross country.
Keyes noted the improvement that Lutmer has made in his last two state meets.
Keyes said that he is eager to see Morris capitalize on his potential.
Morris is learning from a very good example, said Keyes.
Keyes said that for a chance at a state championship, other runners must also finish high.
Keyes was asked who those other runners could be.
The first event of the season will be Pierre’s own invitational at Steamboat Park on Friday, August 25.
