FULL STORY: It’s time for “Nerd News,” covering the most important news for your brain.
Here’s a quick rundown of this week in science . . .
1. Soon, you might be able to get drunk without the hangover. A synthetic alcohol called Alcarelle was in the news this week after the “Wall Street Journal” covered it. A company in the U.K. hopes to start selling Alcarelle by 2026. They say it also doesn’t have the negative health effects of booze.
2. Now that space tourism is happening, space sex is going to be a thing soon . . . the “250 Mile High Club”. Most experts say it should be safe enough. Their main concern is if someone gets PREGNANT. Even a day or two of the radiation up there could harm a fertilized egg, and potentially cause issues.
3. In other space news: Russia launched its first Moon lander in 50 years . . . NASA is worried other countries could find water up there first, and refuse to share . . . and the tech writer who does weird size comparisons with asteroids did another one: A.I. recently found an asteroid the size of 182 beavers.
4. A study found 59% of all the species on Earth live underground or IN the ground, according to a new study. That includes 90% of fungi, 85% of plants, and 50% of bacteria. Only 3% of mammals though.
5. You’ve heard of the weight loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy. This week, the company behind them announced Wegovy can cut heart attack and stroke risk by 20%. It could pave the way for insurance companies to start covering them more.
