Based on August 1, 2023, conditions, South Dakota’s 2023 corn crop is forecast at 798 million bushels, up 21% from last year, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Acreage harvested for grain is estimated at 5.50 million acres, up 10% from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 145 bushels per acre, up 13 bushels from last year.
Soybean production is forecast at 221 million bushels, up 14% from last year. Area for harvest, at 5.25 million acres, is up 4% from 2022. Yield is forecast at 42 bushels per acre, up 4 bushels from last year.
South Dakota’s 2023 winter wheat crop is forecast at 25.9 million bushels, down 32% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 720,000 acres, down 1% from a year ago. Average yield is forecast at 36 bushels per acre, down 16 bushels from last year.
Other spring wheat production is forecast at 21.0 million bushels, down 38% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 700,000 acres, unchanged from a year ago. The yield, forecast at 30 bushels per acre, is down 18 bushels from last year.
Oat production, at 4.93 million bushels, is down 18% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 77,000 acres, up 3% from a year ago. The yield is forecast at 64 bushels per acre, down 16 bushels from last year.
Sorghum for grain production is forecast at 15.6 million bushels, up 31% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 200,000 acres, up 14% from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 78 bushels per acre, up 10 bushels from last year.
Alfalfa hay production is forecast at 3.15 million tons, up 12% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 1.70 million acres, up 3% from 2022. Expected yield, at 1.85 tons per acre, is up 0.15 ton from last year.
All other hay production is forecast at 1.68 million tons, down 4% from last year. Harvested acreage is estimated at 1.20 million acres, down 8% from a year ago. Expected yield, at 1.40 tons per acre, is up 0.05 ton from last year.
