PIERRE – In the playoff era of South Dakota High School Football, no team has done what the Pierre Governors are bidding to do: win seven consecutive state championships.
The six-time defending 11AA champions will begin that quest Friday on the road against Aberdeen Central.
Much of the talent from last year’s championship team graduated, including quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, who is now at Ohio State. But among those returning is tight end/wideout Jett Zabel, who has already announced his intention to play collegiately at North Dakota State, and Cade Kaiser, who takes over as the Governors’ quarterback.
Pierre Head Coach Steve Steele compared this season’s offense and defense to that of last season.
Steele said that Kaiser is doing well as the new quarterback and knows he isn’t expected to do what Kienholz did.
Steele asserts that Zabel and various other players are ready to perform at various spots for the Governors on offense.
The opening opponent, Aberdeen Central, has many new varsity players for this season.
Pierre’s football opener at Aberdeen Central can be heard Friday at 6:25 PM on The Official Voice of the Pierre Governors, River 92.7. Live and archived audio and video will be available at the River 92.7 page at the DRG News app and drgnews.com.
