AUGUST 25, 2023:
An 11 year old boy from Fort Thompson has been identified as the person who died Monday afternoon (Aug. 21, 2023) in a two-vehicle crash 12 miles west of Kadoka.
Preliminary crash information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates a 1996 Toyota Camry and a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer were both driving on Interstate 90 near mile marker 140 in Jackson County. The Camry struck the back of the Trailblazer which caused it to enter the median and roll. The Camry came to rest in the south ditch.
The driver of the Camry, Jacob Jumper, age 22, from Stanwood, Washington, sustained minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Philip Hospital. He was wearing a seatbelt.
The driver of the Trailblazer, 39 year old Donell Red Bear, sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Philip Hospital.
There were three passengers in the Trailblazer.
The 11-year-old male received fatal injuries.
The 7 year old female passenger from Fort Thompson and 35-year-old Rikki Voice from Box Elder both sustained life-threatening injuries. They were taken by ambulance to the Philip Hospital, then flown to a hospital in Rapid City.
Restraint use by occupants of the Trailblazer remains under investigation.
South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

There were three passengers in the Trailblazer. The 11-year-old male passenger sustained fatal injuries. He was not wearing a seatbelt.
The 7-year-old female passenger of the Trailblazer sustained life threatening injuries. She was taken by ambulance to the Philip Hospital and then flown to Rapid City Monument Health Hospital. She was not wearing a seatbelt.
The 35-year-old female passenger of the Trailblazer sustained life threatening injuries. She was taken by ambulance to the Philip Hospital and then flown to Rapid City Monument Health Hospital.
The names of the persons involved have not yet been released.
South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
