FORT PIERRE – Now Stanley County football may receive some statewide notice.
In his first start at running back, Barret Schweitzer rushed 27 times for 173 yards and three touchdowns Friday as Stanley County upset De Smet 38-30 at Ole Williamson Field, giving the Buffaloes their first 2-0 start since 2005, when Stanley County began the season 6-0.
Schweitzer, who filled in for the injured Colton Brady, rushed for his third score on a three-yard run with 8:19 remaining, ending a remarkable 18-play 71-yard drive that lasted 11:45. The Buffaloes started the drive after Britt Carlson’s third touchdown run of the game for De Smet brought the Bulldogs to within 32-30 with 8:02 left in the third quarter. All 18 plays of the drive for SC were on the ground. The drive was extended thanks to a De Smet pass interference penalty that wiped out a fourth-down incompletion by Stanley County.
Broch Zeeb passed for two touchdowns to Brendon Bothwell for the Buffaloes. Bothwell also had an 83-yard touchdown kickoff return with 1:00 left in the first quarter to give SC a 12-8 lead.
Carlson’s second touchdown run with 7:23 left in the first half gave De Smet the lead at 16-12.
Schweitzer ran in for a 20-yard score with 3:36 left in the half to give Stanley County the lead for good at 20-16. He then scored on the last play of the half from a yard out and SC led 26-16 at the half.
Ganon Henrich rushed for a score for De Smet with 9:53 left in the third quarter to cut the Buffalo lead to 26-24. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Zeeb hit Bothwell with a 70-yard touchdown pass.
Carlson threw four interceptions, two by Paxton Deal and one each by Zeeb and Schweitzer. Deal returned the first one 75 yards to set up Stanley County’s first touchdown.
