South Dakota Secretary of State Monae Johnson joins the National Association of Secretaries of State in encouraging citizens to celebrate National Voter Registration Month this month by registering to vote or verifying the accuracy of their current registration.
NASS members established September as National Voter Registration Month in 2002 as a non-partisan means of encouraging voter participation and increasing awareness about state requirements and deadlines for voting.
The month of September 2023, will be highlighted by NASS and other voter outreach groups as National Voter Registration Month.
To register to vote in South Dakota, you must be a US Citizen, have maintained residence in South Dakota for at least thirty days prior to submitting the registration form, will be 18 years or older on or before the next election, not currently be serving a sentence for a felony conviction, and not be judged mentally incompetent in a court of law. The deadline to register to vote for the primary and general elections is 15 days before the election you wish to participate in.
Voter registrations in South Dakota are maintained by each county auditor. You may also register to vote at one of the following locations:
- Municipal Finance Offices
- Driver license exam stations
- Public assistance agencies providing food stamps, Medicaid, TANF or WIC
- Department of Human Services offices that provide assistance to the disabled
- Military recruitment offices
- Office of the Secretary of State
