All wheat production in the United States totaled 1.81 billion bushels in 2023, up ten percent from last year’s total of 1.65 billion bushels. The harvested area totaled 37.3 million acres, up five percent from the previous year. The U.S. yield was estimated at 48.6 bushels an acre, 2.1 bushels higher than in the prior year. The levels of production and changes from 2022 by type were winter wheat, at 1.25 billion bushels, was up 13 percent from last year.
Other spring wheat totaled 505 million bushels, up five percent, and Durum wheat production hit 59.3 million bushels, seven percent lower than the previous year.
Oat production was estimated at 57 million bushels, one percent lower than 2022 totals. USDA estimated the yield at 68.6 bushels an acre, 3.8 bushels higher than the previous year.
Barley production hit 185 million bushels; six percent higher than in 2022, and yield was 72.4 bushels an acre.
In South Dakota, other spring wheat production for 2023 is estimated at 28.0 million bushels, down 18% from last year, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. The 2023 area harvested for grain, at 650,000 acres, is down 8% from 2022. Producers planted 740,000 acres, down 1% from 2022. Yield, at 43.0 bushels per acre, is down 5.0 bushels from 2022.
Winter wheat production is estimated at 32.9 million bushels, down 13% from last year. The area harvested for grain totaled 700,000 acres, down 4% from 2022. Planted acreage totaled 920,000 acres, up 11% from a year earlier. The yield is 47.0 bushels per acre, down 5.0 bushels from 2022.
Barley production is estimated at 468,000 bushels, up 24% from 2022. Area harvested for grain, at 9,000 acres, is up 29% from last year. Planted acreage totaled 38,000 acres, up 27% from 2022. Average yield is 52.0 bushels per acre, down 2.0 bushels from last year.
Oat production is estimated at 5.11 million bushels, down 15% from 2022. Area harvested for grain, at 69,000 acres, is down 8% from last year. Planted acreage totaled 265,000 acres, up 2% from a year earlier. Yield, at 74.0 bushels per acre, is down 6.0 bushels per acre from last year.
