MITCHELL – As good a season as Pierre Governor Girls Soccer had, the season for the Mitchell Kernels is even better.
Mia Mullenmeister scored a hat trick Saturday as Mitchell advanced to the semifinal round for the first time in the SDHSAA Class AA Girls Soccer Championship with a 5-1 win over Pierre at Joe Quintal Field.
Mullenmeister scored on a setup from Makenzie Peterson in the third minute and on a penalty kick in the 39th minute for a 2-0 Mitchell halftime lead.
Grace Engbrecht gave Pierre (9-5-1) its goal early in the second half on a 20-yard shot, a play begun by a precise free kick by Ryann Barry.
Less than a minute later, Mullenmeister scored her third for Mitchell (15-1) and the Kernels regained their two-goal lead.
Peterson scored shortly afterward for a 4-1 advantage and Mitchell scored on an own goal later in the second half.
Emlyn Swanson had six saves for Pierre.
Mitchell, who lost to the Governors in the first round in 2022 3-2 after losing a 2-0 lead, had never won a playoff match before last week. They will play Aberdeen Central in a semifinal match on Tuesday in Mitchell.
