OCTOBER 13, 2023:
Based on October 1 conditions, South Dakota’s 2023 corn production is forecast at 822 million bushels, up 24% from last year’s production, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Area to be harvested for grain, at 5.59 million acres, is up 12% from a year ago. Yield is forecast at 147 bushels per acre, up 15 bushels from last year.
Soybean production is forecast at 217 million bushels, up 13% from last year. Area for harvest, at 5.05 million acres, is down slightly from 2022. Yield is forecast at 43 bushels per acre, up 5.0 bushels from last year.
Sorghum for grain is forecast at 23.2 million bushels, up 95% from last year, and a record high if realized. Area for harvest, at 255,000 acres, is up 46% from 2022. Yield is forecast at 91 bushels per acre, up 23 bushels from last year, and would also be a record high.
All sunflower production is forecast at 789 million pounds, down 27% from last year. Acreage for harvest, at 473,000 acres, is down 147,000 acres from 2022. Yield is forecast at 1,668 pounds per acre, down 78 pounds per acre from a year ago. Of the acres for harvest, non-oil sunflowers account for 38,000 acres and oil sunflowers account for 435,000 acres.
Alfalfa hay production, at 3.91 million tons, is up 39% from last year. Area for harvest, at 1.70 million acres, is up 3% from a year ago. Yield of 2.30 tons per acre, is up 0.60 ton from 2022. All other hay production, at 1.44 million tons, is down 18% from last year. Area for harvest, at 1.20 million acres, is down 8% from a year ago. Yield of 1.20 tons per acre, is down 0.15 ton.

Sorghum production is forecast at 21.7 million bushels, up 82% from last year. Area for harvest, at 255,000 acres, is up 46% from 2022. Yield is forecast at 85 bushels per acre, up 17 bushels from last year and a record high if realized.
Dry edible pea production is forecast at 360,000 cwt, up 20% from a year ago. Area for harvest, at a record low 12,000 acres, is down 14% from 2022. Yield is forecast at 3,000 pounds per acre, up 860 pounds from last year and a record high if realized.
