Today (Oct. 25, 2023) is Winter Weather Awareness Day in South Dakota.
Peter Rogers is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls.
Such things as checking your furnace to be sure it’s running properly, making sure you pack a winter survival kit in your vehicle and winterizing your lawn sprinklers.

Parts of the Dakotas will look wintry by Friday (Oct. 27, 2023).
Forecasters say a weather system will drop measurable snowfall–mainly across western and north central North Dakota–from Thursday afternoon into Friday morning.
Aberdeen National Weather Service meteorologist Megan Mulford says the snowflakes could reach down into South Dakota, mainly west of the James River valley.
Snowfall amounts won’t be terribly impressive, but what will be noticeable is some very chilly air that will stick around into early next week.
Winter Storm Warnings are posted for western and north central North Dakota, but as of midday Wednesday they do NOT extend into South Dakota.
