PIERRE – Jared Lutmer is giving himself an opportunity for more cross country excellence at the next level.
Lutmer, who last month became Pierre’s second individual cross country state champion, signed a letter of intent Monday to run collegiately for South Dakota State.
Lutmer will join a Jackrabbit program that won its eighth consecutive Summit League championship in October and finished fifth in the NCAA DI Midwest Regional earlier this month. Longtime SDSU head coach Rod DeHaven, a former Olympic marathoner, has been named as a conference coach of the year 13 times and has led Jackrabbit teams to 13 conference titles.
Lutmer cited a prominent reason as to why he chose SDSU.
Lutmer said that he knows that he will have to be dedicated to excel with the Jackrabbits.
Pierre boys cross country Head Coach Jim Keyes said that Lutmer is very good for a reason.
Keyes said that he is thrilled that Lutmer can be mentored by longtime SDSU head coach and former Olympic marathoner Rod DeHaven.
