AUGUST 23, 2023, UPDATE:
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Injured North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum says he plans to participate in the Republican presidential debate. The Burgum campaign posted a photo on X, formerly known as Twitter, of Burgum entering the stage on crutches during a candidate walkthrough earlier Wednesday (Aug. 23, 2023). “I’m in,” he posted. Burgum hurt his Achilles tendon playing basketball on Tuesday night. A campaign spokesman said earlier Wednesday it was unclear if Burgum would “be able to stand at the debate” Wednesday night at the Milwaukee Bucks’ arena. Missing the debate would have been a massive setback for Burgum, the least known of the eight candidates expected to participate. The two-hour debate is Burgum’s best opportunity to introduce himself to voters. Front-runner Donald Trump says he’s skipping the debate.

JUNE 7, 2023:
UNDATED (AP)- North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum has announced his candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, adding his name to the long list of contenders hoping to dent former President Donald Trump’s early lead in the race. Burgum made the announcement in The Wall Street Journal and was expected to kicked off his campaign Wednesday (June 7, 2023) in the city of Fargo. He is known to few outside North Dakota and Republican governor political circles and faces enormous odds. As evidence of his uphill challenge, he isn’t even the most notable candidate to announce a presidential campaign on Wednesday. Four hundred miles to the south, former Vice President Mike Pence was launching his White House bid in Iowa.
JUNE 5, 2023:
UNDATED (AP)- North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum has taken another step toward entering the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. He posted a YouTube video Monday (June 5, 2023) touting his rise from a small town boy to a self-made software entrepreneur and a governor who cut red tape and taxes. Although the video doesn’t mention it, Burgum has signed several new laws this year that restrict abortion rights and the rights of transgender people. Burgum is expected to announce his candidacy Wednesday in Fargo. He would enter a crowded field dominated by ex-President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
