South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem delivered her budget proposal for the remainder of fiscal year 2024 and all of fiscal year 2025 to a joint session of the state legislature Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 5, 2023).
The Governor’s budget proposal includes a 4% increase for “the big three”– education, state employees and healthcare providers. It’s something House Majority Leader and District 24 Representative Will Mortenson of Pierre was pleased to hear.
When discussing her proposed 4% increase in funding for education, Noem chastised the school districts that haven’t put the state’s full funding increase into teacher salaries over the past several years. Mortenson said lawmakers will be looking into those numbers.
The legislature will consider Noem’s budget during the 2024 legislative session, which begins Jan. 9, 2024.
