At their meeting this week (Dec. 19, 2023), the Pierre City Commission approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Boys & Girls Club of the Capital Area to make improvements to the club gym.
Through the agreement, the City will provide $50,000 to install a new floor in the city-owned gym that’s attached to the club. For their part, the club will provide $50,000 and leverage a recently awarded $100,000 grant.
“Shortly after being elected Mayor, I made a commitment to make improvements to the Boys & Girls Club,” said Pierre Mayor Steve Harding. “Since then, we have partnered together to remodel and expand the club, improve the playground, and resurface the parking lot. Now it’s time to give the gym an upgrade.”
A polysport floor will be installed. It is a low-maintenance option that requires no stripping or waxing. It will have lines for basketball, volleyball, pickleball, soccer, and four-square built in.
“This will be a very nice improvement to our gym space for both the club kids and local groups who regularly use it,” said Becky Spoehr, Boys & Girls Club Director. “Users can also expect some other improvements to the gym as well.”
Floor installation is scheduled for February 2024; the work is expected to be complete in March.
The City of Pierre owns the Boys & Girls Club building, including the attached gymnasium. The Boys & Girls Club use the gym for programming space during their normal operating hours. The gym is available to other groups during evenings and weekends.
