ONIDA – Longtime Sully Buttes coach Mark Senftner will be honored by having the basketball court in the Sully Buttes gym dedicated to him tonight (December 21, 2023), following the Chargers’ varsity girls’ game with Wolsey-Wessington.
Senftner passed away in October 2022, almost two years after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. He guided the Charger girls to Class B state championships in 2007, 2008, 2016 and 2017 and to seven other state tournament appearances. He won over 500 combined games as a head coach in his native Timber Lake and with Sully Buttes.
Also, Senftner led Sully Buttes football to 101 wins in 14 seasons as head coach and three state championship game appearances.
Sully Buttes Athletic Director Brian White said that the court dedication will certainly mean a lot to Senftner’s family, but also to others.
White said that Senftner’s loss is still deeply felt.
White talked of the influence Senftner still has on the current Charger girls team and its head coach, Susie Rilling, a longtime assistant to Senftner.
White detailed the schedule for Thursday and when the dedication ceremony will take place.
