Corn for grain production in South Dakota based on year-end surveys is estimated at a record high 854 million bushels, up 29% from 2022, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Yield of 152 bushels per acre is up 20 bushels from last year. Farmers harvested 5.62 million acres of corn for grain up 12% from 2022. Corn for silage production is a record high 8.84 million tons, up 34% from 2022. Yield of 17.0 tons per acre is up 5.0 tons from last year. Farmers harvested 520,000 acres, down 5% from 2022. Total acreage planted to corn for all purposes is a record high 6.30 million acres, up 10% from last year.
Soybean production for 2023 totaled 223 million bushels, up 16% from 2022. Yield, at 44.0 bushels per acre, is up 6.0 bushels from a year earlier. Area for harvest, at 5.07 million acres, is unchanged from 2022. Total acreage planted is 5.10 million acres, unchanged from last year.
Alfalfa hay production, at 3.97 million tons, is up 40% from a year earlier. The average yield, at 2.35 tons per acre, is up 0.65 ton per acre from 2022. Area harvested, at 1.69 million acres, is up 1% from 2022. Alfalfa haylage and greenchop at 420,000 tons, is up 100% from a year earlier. Average yield, at 5.25 tons per acre, is down 0.75 ton per acre from 2022. Area harvested, at 80,000 acres, is up 129% from 2022. Seedings of alfalfa during 2023 totaled 95,000 acres, up 25,000 acres from the year earlier.
All other hay production, at 2.15 million tons, is up 27% from a year earlier. The average yield, at 1.70 tons per acre, is up 0.35 ton per acre from last year. Area harvested, at 1.27 million acres, is up 1% from 2022. All other haylage and greenchop production, at 90,000 tons, is down 12% from a year earlier. Average yield, at 6.00 tons per acre, is down 0.80 ton per acre from last year. Area harvested, at 15,000 acres, is unchanged from 2022.
Sorghum for grain production in 2023 is estimated at a record high 25.2 million bushels, up 112% from 2022. Yield, at a record high 90.0 bushels per acre, is up 22.0 bushels from a year earlier. Area harvested for grain, at 280,000 acres, is up 60% from 2022. Sorghum for silage production is 390,000 tons, down 40% from 2022. Yield of 13.0 tons per acre is up 3.7 tons from last year. Farmers harvested 30,000 acres, down 57% from 2022. Total acreage planted to sorghum for all purposes is 335,000 acres, up 20% from last year.
Oil sunflower production in 2023 is 726 million pounds, down 28% from last year. Yield, at 1,650 pounds per acre, is down 90 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 440,000 acres, is down 24% from 2022. Total acreage planted is 455,000 acres, down 25% from last year. Nonoil sunflower production of 91.2 million pounds is up 25% from last year. Yield, at record high 2,400 pounds per acre, is up 570 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 38,000 acres, is down 5% from 2022. Total acreage planted is 40,000 acres, down 5% from last year.
Proso millet production in 2023 is estimated at 2.88 million bushels, up 159% from last year’s production. Yield, at a record high 45.0 bushels per acre, is up 15.0 bushels from a year earlier. Area harvested for grain, at 64,000 acres, is up 73% from 2022. Total acreage planted is 74,000 acres, up 57% from last year.
Dry edible pea production is estimated at 252,000 cwt, down 10% from 2022. Yield is estimated at 2,100 pounds per acre, up 350 pounds from last year. Acres harvested are estimated at 12,000, down 25% from a year ago. Total acreage planted is 14,000 acres, down 13% from last year.
Safflower production is estimated at 18.2 million pounds, up 42% from 2022. Yield per harvested acre is estimated at 1,100 pounds, up 300 pounds from last year. Acres harvested are estimated at 16,500, up 3% from a year ago. Total acreage planted is 17,000 acres, down 4% from last year.
Principal crop area planted totaled 17.2 million acres, up 4% from 2022. Area harvested, at 16.4 million acres, is up 3% from last year. South Dakota principal crop acres include corn, sorghum, oats, barley, rye, winter wheat, other spring wheat, soybeans, sunflower, proso millet, and all hay. Double cropped acres and unharvested small grains planted as cover crops are also included.
