JANUARY 17, 2024:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom says he will not sign a proposed ban on tackle football for kids under 12. A bill to gradually phase out tackle football for kids under 12 had passed a legislative committee last week. The bill had to pass the state Assembly by the end of January 2024 to have a chance at becoming law this year. But Newsom’s pledge not to sign the bill into law effectively ends the proposal’s chances. Advocates say the ban would protect kids from the risk of brain injury. But opponents say the ban would have cut off kids from a source of activity and exercise.
JANUARY 10, 2024:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California lawmakers are debating whether to ban tackle football for children under 12. The bill will have its first public hearing Wednesday (Jan. 10, 2024) before a legislative committee. The bill is still a long way from becoming law. It must clear the state Assembly by the end of January to have a chance at becoming law this year. Concussion Legacy Foundation CEO Chris Nowinski says children who don’t understand the risk should be protected from harm. Steve Famiano, of the Save Youth Football California coalition, says youth football leagues need more time to implement a 2021 law that put safeguards in place.
