U.S. Meat Export Federation President and CEO Dan Halstrom just completed a market visit to Hong Kong for the first time since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. He reports that Hong Kong’s foodservice sector, which was decimated by limitations on restaurant hours and traffic, as well as travel and tourism restrictions, is achieving a gradual recovery but still has much room for further improvement. Halstrom notes that U.S. beef exports to Hong Kong increased in 2023 and will exceed $400 million when year-end data is available.
On the pork side, Hong Kong’s local industry is very concerned about a series of recent African swine fever outbreaks. These incidents have resulted in significant culling of pigs over the past two months and could heighten the need for imported pork.
