Three months ago the Pierre Governors won a record seventh consecutive Class 11AA State Football Championship. The success of the team and the tradition of winning has been engineered by the coaching staff, but at its core, has also been sustained by countless players who love the game and have a desire to be the best.
In a reflection of that success, eight players from this year’s championship team have now signed letters of intent to continue their football careers at the collegiate level.
Standout tight end Jett Zabel signed his letter in December 2023 to play at North Dakota State. Wednesday (Feb. 7, 2024) seven more players signed their letters as well.
- Two of the signees, defensive lineman Emmitt Andersen and quarterback/receiver Cade Kaiser, signed to play at Northern State in Aberdeen;
- wide receiver Tyan Buus will participate in both football and basketball for Mount Marty;
- linebacker Lucas Chamberlin will head to Dakota State;
- defensive back Spencer Easland will be off to Wayne State in Nebraska;
- linebacker/safety Trey Lewis will reunite with three former Governor teammates from last year’s senior class at the University of Sioux Falls;
- and defensive back Spencer Skjonsberg is now a Minnesota State-Mankato Maverick.
Governor football head coach Steve Steele says these players love the game and have put in the work to play it well.
Steele says the players have fed the tradition and winning culture of Governor football.
In eight years as the Governor head coach, the last seven of which have ended with the hoisting of a championship trophy, 31 of Coach Steele’s players have now signed on to play college football.
