SIOUX FALLS, S. D. – The two powerhouses of South Dakota girls wrestling– the Pierre Governors and the Canton C-Hawks– traded top spots as the No. 1 ranked girls team all season, according to the Dakota Grappler rankings. As the girls state tournament begins Thursday (Feb. 22, 2024) at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, fans could be treated to a very intriguing race for the team title.
Pierre and Canton have dominated girls wrestling in the first two years of the sport with Pierre winning the first two State titles in 2022 and 2023. The Governor girls, coached by Matt Thorson, qualified 10 athletes for the state meet including two individual top rated wrestlers. Dani Ringstmeyer, a junior, is the top seed in the 126-pound class. Abigail Lewis, a freshman and the daughter of Pierre boys wrestling coach Shawn Lewis, is 37-0 this season and is top-seeded at 152. She is one of three undefeated wrestlers from around the state competing at the meet.
Just as the last two years, the Governors and C-Hawks are expected to battle it out for the State Championship again.
