CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh has pleaded guilty in federal court to financial crimes. Thursday’s (Sept. 21, 2023) court appearance is the first time the disbarred attorney has admitted responsibility for a crime before a judge. Murdaugh is serving life in prison without parole for killing his wife and son, but he adamantly denied shooting them from the witness stand at his double murder trial. In federal court, Murdaugh pleaded guilty to 22 counts of financial fraud and money laundering. He will be sentenced at a later date. The federal guilty plea likely locks in years if not decades in prison, even if the double murder conviction is overturned.

UNDATED (AP)- Disgraced South Carolina lawyer Alex Murdaugh is about to put his fate before a small-town jury. Murdaugh’s trial on two counts of murder in the June 2021 deaths of his wife and son is scheduled to start Monday (Jan. 23, 2o23) with jury selection in Colleton County. The 54-year-old’s life has unraveled over the past two years. He faces about 100 other criminal counts as prosecutors say he stole millions of dollars from clients, committed insurance fraud trying to stage his own death and ran a drug and money laundering ring. But Murdaugh has adamantly denied killing his wife and son, saying he found them shot to death at their home after visiting his ailing father.
SEPTEMBER 2021:
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Defense attorneys for a prominent South Carolina lawyer say he plans to turn himself in to face charges in a plot to arrange his own death that ended with the shooter only grazing him in the head. Lawyer Jim Griffin says Alex Murdaugh plans to be in Hampton County to surrender to police Thursday and have a bond hearing. Griffin says the charges are connected to insurance fraud. State police say Murdaugh tried to arrange his death Sept. 4 so his surviving son could collect a $10 million life insurance policy. The State Law Enforcement Division hasn’t confirmed any arrest warrants against Murdaugh. The deaths of Murdaugh’s wife and son at their home June 7 remains unsolved.
