An assessment done by Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre two years ago has turned into a newly created map of the trail systems in Fort Pierre and Pierre.
St. Mary’s Regional President and CEO Shantel Krebs says access to recreation amenities, such as parks, bike paths, or walking trails are things that positively impact an individual’s physical activity.
Krebs says physical activity helps people of all ages and abilities improve their health.
Krebs says the map is available on the websites for the City of Pierre and the City of Fort Pierre as well as at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital, Rawlins Library and Pierre City Hall.
Krebs says the map is a resource for businesses and organizations that provide information to people living in or visiting Fort Pierre or Pierre.
Physical activity is associated with improved sleep, cognitive ability, better bone and musculoskeletal health, reduced risk of dementia and is important for the prevention of obesity. Conversely, physical inactivity is linked to increased risk of health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, cancer, stroke, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and shortened life expectancy.
WRITTEN VERSION:
A Community Health Need Assessment done by Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre two years ago showed community interest in having more access to affordable physical activities.
To address that need, representatives from Avera, the City of Pierre and the City of Fort Pierre have developed a map that highlights free and low-cost recreational opportunities in the area. The map is available on the websites for the City of Pierre and the City of Fort Pierre as well as at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital, Rawlins library and Pierre City Hall.
According to the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps Report, 22% of adults in South Dakota reported participating in no physical activity outside of work. This ranged from 19% to 41% of adults across counties in the state.
Shantel Krebs, Regional President and CEO of Avera St. Mary’s Hospital, says access to recreation amenities, such as parks, bike paths, or walking trails are environmental factors that impact an individual’s physical activity. She says regular physical activity is one of the most important things people can do to improve their health.
Krebs says this map is a great resource for businesses and organizations that provide resources to people living in or visiting our communities. She says we all benefit when we move more.
